Primary Purpose:

Develop the overall program management of orchestral music for the campus. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular orchestra activities and ensure compliance with all regional, state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), and district goals/requirements. Work collaboratively with elementary music specialists (General Music & Suzuki) and high school orchestra feeder program teachers to recruit and retain students into the orchestra programs. Plan activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree from accredited university

Valid Texas teaching certificate in music

Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned

 

Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of overall operation of orchestral music program

Knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Knowledge of regional, state, UIL, and TMEA policies governing orchestra Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Ability to manage a budget

Ability to interpret data

Ability to implement policy and procedures

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Understanding of and commitment to customer care principles

 

Experience:

One year student teaching or approved internship

One to three years teaching and orchestra directing experience, preferred

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Program Planning

1.  Direct the middle school orchestral performers in multiple settings, including orchestra courses, concert performances, soloists and ensembles, regional orchestras, district orchestras, area and all-state orchestras, orchestra camps, and musical theatre presentations when asked to collaborate with the campus theater director.

2.  Lead and collaborate with fellow orchestra staff in the development and implementation plans for the orchestral music program and show written documentation of preparation as required.

3.  Establish and monitor performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in extra-curricular events related to orchestra.

4.  Provide for orchestra participation at extra-curricular events, including (but not limited to) campus concerts, cluster concerts, community activities, UIL competitions, TMEA activities, and other events as directed by your campus Principal and/or Vertical Team Leader.

5.  Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.

6.  Comply with local, state, and federal laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL rules, and board policy in the orchestra area.

7.  Support orchestra booster club activities.

8.  Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.

9.  Recommend policies to improve the program.

10.  Execute your assigned regular (daily) teaching schedule of classes and any travel required by your unique teaching assignment at one or various campuses. 11.  Collaborate with feeder elementary music (General Music & Suzuki) teachers as it relates to the music curriculum or orchestra in the district and report to the high school Head Orchestra Director any concerns related to adherence to curriculum within the feeder pattern.

12.  Coordinate recruiting activities to maintain consistent and growing enrollments and meet district fine arts goals in the middle school orchestra programs.

13.  Attend cluster/feeder pattern monthly meetings with all middle school directors. Communicate about and accommodate the needs of feeder programs.

14.  Attend all UIL and TMEA region meetings as a representative of your campus to vote and voice concern or advocacy for sites, dates, and processes of future contests and meetings. Instructional Strategies

15.  Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.

16.  Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.

17.  Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students assigned, the district curriculum, and TEKS in music.

18.  Conduct on-going assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

19.  Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

 

Budget and Inventory

20.  Ensure that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.

21.  Compile and monitor program budgets and cost estimates in collaboration with the Vertical Team Leader and based on documented program needs.

22.  Coordinate fundraising activities for the development of additional orchestra activities, festivals, and field trips. Ensure that all fundraising activities are district and vendor approved.

23.  Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department and report this information to the high school Head Orchestra and/or Director of Fine Arts when requested.

24.  Help oversee the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all orchestra equipment.

 

Classroom Management and Organization

25.  Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

26.  Accompany and supervise students on in-district, in-town, and out-of-town trips.

27.  Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

28.  Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

29.  Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

 

Communication

30. Establish and maintain open and professional communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, administrators, and teachers.

31. Maintain professional relationship with campus and feeder orchestra directors, colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

 

Professional Growth and Development

32.  in staff development activities to improve job-related skills and which will be beneficial to music education and orchestral music.

33.  Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.

34.  Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

35.  Other duties as assigned.
